Today’s cannabis companies want more natural and sustainable products. At Botani, we combine the needs of the modern era with the craftsmanship of the past.
Our two-step process to making botanical wrappers and fillers dates back to the 1950s, when SWM International, the brand’s parent company, first introduced this unique approach for tobacco cigar paper. By adapting this time-tested method to the cannabis industry, we can provide our B2B customers with the same high-quality botanical products.
Botani's Innovative Technique
Papermaking is fundamentally a two-step process consisting of converting a fibrous raw material to pulp and then converting the pulp into paper. Botani, however, has pioneered a unique approach to this craft. We take a fiber, extract the solubles, make a base sheet out of the fiber, and then reintroduce the solubles back into the sheet.
“This process allows us to create mechanically strong papers without losing its unique botanical essence, resulting in a more natural product,” says Alex Boone, Managing Director of Botani and VP/GM Alternative Markets for SWM International.
This unique approach also sets Botani apart from many of our competitors, who use what’s called a cast-slurry process, grinding ingredients into dust and extruding them onto a belt to dry.
Refining Our Craft
Refining Our Craft
Our paper-making facilities use the same two-step process but with slight modifications.
At the Ancram, New York facility, we mirror the process invented 60 years ago, extracting the solubles from the fiber and reintroducing them after the base paper is created.
At our paper plants, including our RYO facility in St. Girons, France, we skip the extraction step, enabling us to make ultra-thin and lightweight papers using a variety of fiber furnishes. However, we have recently launched a process that allows us to introduce inclusions of hemp flowers and leaves as we make the web of paper. No extraction necessary—a truly different approach!
Every inch of our papers is scanned for defects, guaranteeing a premium user experience and better performance for applications like cones, booklets, and tubes.

At our St. Girons plant, we source all the hemp used in our new papers from certified organic sources in Europe. Additionally, our hemp inclusions contain less than 0.03% THC, ensuring more consumers can enjoy these unique papers while adhering to global regulations.

Our new range of hemp-inclusion papers enables our customers to differentiate their products in a highly competitive market.
“This new line of papers will help create products that stand out while meeting the growing demand for natural solutions,” Boone said.
It’s another way our two-step process helps you step out from the pack.
